Hunger by Knut Hamsun, read by Knut Hamsun's AI-generated voice
"AI" has become the ideal suitcase word: almost anything for almost anybody. Legatum Publishing's newest project Vox Machina, invites you to discover how a computer program can "read" a book with the voice of a person who is no longer among us: in this case, the voice of Knut Hamsun, the Norwegian Nobel Prize for Literature laureate: Hunger, written by Knut Hamsun and read by Knut Hamsun.Yesterday's impossible dream is now reality and the voice of the older Hamsun retraces the steps of the young nameless writer through Christiania, the city with thousands of shining windows.
There is nothing artificial and everything is intelligent in this AI-voiced audiobook: hunger, joy, depression, hope, cynical egotism and disinterested love, all the nuances of Hamsun's writing are present in this Vox Machina "interpretation" of Hunger. The machine played along and, at times, even surprised us with shades of tone that we never thought possible.
Vox Machina, Vox Dei?
The alchemy worked: we combined Hamsun's words with Hamsun's voice and we brought to life a part of Hamsun's spirit. Only the "direction" is ours, not unlike a theatre director working with a writer who is preparing a public reading of his own works.
Legatum Publishing will present the Hunger audiobook on Hamsun`s birthday, August 4th 2024, during the Hamsundagene Festival in Hamarøy, Norway.
Up until August 10th, the Festival`s closure, we will in this daily blog write about the various lectures and happenings - we wish to keep the international community of Hamsun lovers informed and give the new generations of literature enthusiasts a chance to discover the magical world of Knut Hamsun.
